7 Checks to Avoid Hidden Costs in Your Next Grader or Paver Purchase

Check #2: Get the Detailed Spec—Vague 'Includes' Are Red Flags

What to do: Request a spec sheet that lists every component's brand and model. Not 'hydraulic system,' but 'Rexroth A10V pump, Eaton control valve.' Not 'grade control,' but 'Topcon 3D MC, dual antenna.' Not 'engine,' but 'Cummins QSB6.7, Stage V compliant.'

Why it matters: Most people don't realize that two machines with the same model number can have vastly different components depending on the dealer or the year. Check #4: Audit the Parts & Service Network Before You Need It

What to do: Map out how you'll get parts and service for the next 3-5 years. Not just 'there's a dealer nearby,' but: what's their stock of key parts? How fast can they get a non-stock part? Do they have a service truck? What's their typical response time?

Why it matters: When a paver goes down in the middle of a paving season, every hour of downtime costs you money—potentially thousands per hour. A 'cheap' machine with poor local parts support is no bargain. What to do: Build a spreadsheet with three columns: initial purchase, annual operating cost (fuel, maintenance, repairs), and projected resale value at year 3. Use real numbers from your checks above. Then compare across options.

Why it matters: This is where everything comes together. A machine with a $150,000 price tag might have a lower 3-year TCO than a $130,000 option if it burns less fuel, has better warranty coverage, and retains value better. I built a cost calculator after getting burned on hidden fees twice—once on a parts order where 'free shipping' meant ground freight but not the $250 liftgate fee.
