If you've ever had a machine down on a Friday afternoon and a job start on Monday, you know the exact feeling. You're not comparing spec sheets. You're comparing two ways to get the project moving: buying a Leeboy 685 grader or investing in Leeboy 8500 paver parts. It sounds a little like asking what is a good PSAT score for a 10th grader? Everyone expects one number, but the real answer is: it depends on the goal. In construction, the goal is usually a date and a penalty clause.

I coordinate parts and service for a heavy equipment dealer. I've handled 200+ rush orders in the last three years, including same-day turnarounds for contractors who had inspectors waiting. I'm going to compare these two options the way I'd think about them in an emergency: lead time, cost visibility, job fit, and the logistics around the job that nobody puts on the purchase order.

Lead time: parts usually win, and it isn't close

A Leeboy 685 grader is a serious machine. But it's not an emergency procurement item. Even a used 685 that's sitting on a dealer lot needs freight, inspection, and maybe a mechanic to look at it. Based on publicly listed used equipment prices on MachineryTrader.com in January 2025, used 685 graders were listed anywhere from the mid-$40,000s to over $115,000, depending on hours, condition, and attachments. Then add freight, maybe tires, a service check, and someone who knows the machine. Roughly speaking, the final number is often 15% to 20% higher than the listing.

Leeboy 8500 paver parts are more contained. A wear plate might be $150. A full screed rebuild kit might be $7,500. You can quote the exact part, see the price, and know what you're approving. In an emergency, that kind of cost visibility is worth a lot. Honestly, that's why most of my emergency calls start with parts, not machines.

But then again, parts can be a black box too, if the diagnostic work was lazy. I once assumed 'same part number' meant same fit across models. Didn't verify. Turned out the 685 and 8500 series used different pins. The part arrived, and I looked like an idiot. That mistake taught me to always check the parts manual against the serial number. I only believed in that step after I skipped it once and shipped the wrong part. (Mental note: I still do this before every emergency quote.)

Job fit: don't solve the wrong bottleneck

If the grading fleet is the real constraint, then buy the Leeboy 685 grader, but give it the lead time it deserves. Don't call me on a Monday expecting it to grade by Tuesday. That's not how freight works.

And if you're stuck because of a gantry crane scheduling gap or a Denali truck that won't start, fix that first. No amount of Leeboy parts or new iron will save a job that can't get people and equipment to the right place.

I'm not 100% sure this applies to every fleet, but in my experience, the best move is the one that gets the bottleneck moving.
