LeeBoy Asphalt Paver Maintenance: Preventive vs. Reactive, and What I'd Do Differently

  4. Pull long strokes toward you. Wipe the blade on a rag every few strokes so you don't spread the grit back onto the metal.
  5. Inspect the coupler and tongue for cracks or bent steel. If scraping reveals a crack, don't tow that trailer. Fix it first.
  6. Wipe the ball and coupler clean, then apply a thin layer of grease before coupling.

That whole process takes about four minutes. It's boring, and it's annoying when you're already running late. But it's exactly the kind of five-minute check that prevents a five-day correction.

FMCSA regulations (49 CFR 396.11, fmcsa.dot.gov) require commercial drivers to inspect coupling devices before a trip. I used to think that meant giving the chains a tug. Now I know it means actually cleaning the surface where the coupler attaches. A tongue scraper is cheaper than a lawyer.

The Counterintuitive Part: Preventive Maintenance Can Be Done Wrong

Which Approach Should You Pick?

If you run one small paver and you can handle a day of downtime, reactive repair might be acceptable for a season. You're trading cash for time. Just do it with your eyes open.

If you run paid jobs with asphalt sitting in a truck, you don't have the luxury of surprises. Preventive maintenance is a no-brainer.

If you have a dealer that can show up same-day, reactive still doesn't fix the problem of a failed sensor in the middle of a pave. Downtime isn't just repair time; it's contract time.

My recommendation: build a PM plan around your equipment, but keep your ears open. A worn bearing sounds different from a good one. A trailer tongue that scrapes clean without revealing a crack is a happy tongue. A gantry crane with a fresh inspection tag is a crane you can trust.
