The $4,000 Asphalt Mistake That Taught Me to Stop Assuming

I'll never forget the morning in July 2024 when the inspector walked up to me, clipboard in hand, and said, "This pavement isn't going to hold." Mistake #1: I Assumed Compaction Was Built In

I know, I know—any experienced operator would laugh at this. But I was an equipment procurement guy, not a paving foreman. I'd seen demos where the paver's own screed and tampers gave a decent finish. What I didn't realize: that finish is only the start. On a job requiring 95% density, you need a dedicated compactor—and not just any compactor.

I ordered a Leeboy plate compactor (they're great for patch work and tight spots). But we were paving a 12-foot-wide road. A plate compactor is simply the wrong tool for full-width, deep-lift compaction. I should've gone with a pneumatic tire roller or a tandem vibratory roller.

  2. Attachment compatibility checked? – Pin sizes, hydraulic flow, and hitch type for every tool from the old fleet. Don't assume the Crewe tractor's bucket fits the new loader.
  3. Operator certifications current? – Forklift, crane, and any other relevant cert. At least two certified operators per shift.
  4. Safety documentation ready? – MSDS, site-specific safety plans, forklift training records.
  5. Spare parts on hand? – filters, belts, and common wear items for the Leeboy equipment.
  6. Fuel and fluid logistics? – Diesel, hydraulic oil, grease. Don't assume the old Crewe tractor's fuel tank will work.
  7. Warranty and support contacts? – Leeboy dealer number, technical support hours.

I printed it on a laminated card and stuck it to the inside of every equipment shed. We've used it on six projects since. Zero repeat failures.

A Note on the Plate Compactor

The Leeboy plate compactor is a fine machine—for the right job. It's excellent for trenches, corners, and small repair patches. But if you need full-width compaction on a road, step up to a roller. I recommend the plate compactor for contractors who do mostly sidewalk or driveway work, and for municipalities maintaining patch repairs. If you're doing road construction, you need something heavier.

This recommendation was accurate as of January 2025. Equipment specs evolve, so always verify with your Leeboy dealer before finalizing your equipment list.

The Bottom Line

I'm not going to tell you that buying Leeboy equipment was a mistake—it wasn't. The paver performed beautifully once we got the compaction right. The mistake was assuming that equipment alone solves the problem. It's the system—people, attachments, certifications, site preparation—that makes it work.

If I could redo that decision, I'd spend 10% of the equipment budget on pre-project planning: verification calls, compatibility checks, and certification scheduling. But given what I knew then—nothing about the interplay between old and new equipment—my choice was reasonable. The lesson is: never assume what you don't verify.
