Used Leeboy Motor Graders & 8500 Paver Parts: A Quality Inspector’s Take on Total Cost

Before you sign for that used Leeboy motor grader or that “good deal” on 8500 paver parts, look at the full cost of ownership — not the sticker price. I’ve rejected 112 out of 780 incoming parts and equipment orders this year, and most of those rejections trace back to buyers who optimized for the lowest quote and skipped the verification steps.

The cheapest Leeboy part or machine you can buy is usually the most expensive one you’ll ever own. That’s not a slogan. I’ll show you the math and the quality checks that make it true.

Why I keep talking about total cost

I’m the quality and brand compliance manager at a regional heavy equipment dealer. I review every parts shipment and pre-owned machine before it gets listed or delivered — roughly 300 orders a year. In our Q1 2024 audit, we rejected 9% of first deliveries because specs didn’t match our purchase orders. Sometimes it’s a wrong bolt grade. Sometimes it’s a pump that’s rated 20% below OEM pressure.

Ask five contractors what “total cost of ownership” means and you’ll get five different answers. For me it’s simple:

  • Base price (or purchase price)
  • Freight + rigging / setup
  • Inspection, testing, re-work if needed
  • Downtime cost if the part fails
  • Long-term durability / repair frequency

Look beyond the first row. On a used Leeboy motor grader, the cheapest machine might have worn pins and bushings that add $8,000 in slop and rework within six months. The “overpriced” one from a dealer who actually lists compression test results can be a better deal even if it costs $12,000 more upfront.

I saw this play out last fall. A contractor bought a bargain-bin 1988 Leeboy 635 grader from an auction. The price was good — $47,000. But the blade lift cylinders were leaking internally, and the circle had so much play that the grader couldn’t hold a grade for more than 20 feet. He spent $9,400 on reman cylinders and a new circle insert, plus he lost three days of paving time renting a second machine. The first-year total pushed past $61,000. Meanwhile, a dealer’s refurbished 685 with documented maintenance history was sitting at $58,900, ready to work. His “deal” actually cost more before the season ended.

Why “cheap” often hides a defect

People assume low price means the seller is more efficient. What they don’t see is which specs got cut. A loader valve that’s rated for 2,000 psi instead of 3,000 psi costs 40% less to make — and it will fail exactly when you need it most.

I’ve seen aftermarket Leeboy 8500 paver parts that looked identical to OEM but had a shaft hardness of 35 Rockwell C vs. 50. The hard part is that nobody checks hardness on a parts counter. The soft shaft wears out faster and takes the gearbox with it. And when the gearbox fails, it’s a $7,000 loss instead of the $250 you “saved” on a cheaper part.

(Note to self: always ask for the material cert on any wear component. It takes ten minutes and can save you thousands.)

What my inspection process actually looks like

For high-value components, I don’t accept a “looks fine” from anyone. We follow ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 sampling procedures, General Inspection Level II. If a batch of 125 pins comes in, we inspect 20 at normal severity. If we find any critical defect, we reject the entire lot. That’s not overkill — it’s how we stop a bad batch from eating the budget later.

On used machines, I go through a checklist that sounds too basic to matter:

  • Hydraulic fluid sampling (we send out for wear metals)
  • Pin fit at all pivot points
  • Wear shoe thickness on the grader blade
  • Air filter condition and turbo shaft play
  • Paver screed straightness across the full width

Believe it or not, some of these are “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” questions and answers material. Like: which direction does a right-hand thread tighten? You’d be surprised how many supposedly qualified techs screw that up (ugh). We caught a leaking fitting on a bucket truck a few months back because the tech had cross-threaded a fitting — and it wasn’t even the right style fitting for the pressure rating.

We also do a walk-around with a bucket truck when a used paver or grader has elevated work platforms or running lights on top. It sounds mundane, but I’ve found cracked welds on ROPS mounts, rattle-bagged light brackets, and once a bird nest full of dried grass sitting right next to the exhaust manifold. A five-minute bucket truck check has saved us from two fires and one very bad OSHA surprise.

Site noise surprises: headphones and hearing protection

One thing I keep seeing on job sites is technicians wearing consumer noise-cancelling headphones like the Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 while they work near idling equipment. Comfortable — sure. But most of those consumer ANC headphones don’t carry a Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) that meets OSHA requirements for construction sites. They can actually be dangerous: your ears get the attenuation they expect, but only from the music, while the surrounding noise still gets through. For a correct check, use proper ear muffs with an NRR of at least 25 dB, and leave the ANC headphones for the warehouse.

That kind of detail sounds small, but it’s the same mindset as spec verification. If a part or procedure is rated for a certain environment, use it in that environment or expect a surprise. The same is true for parts that “look right” but aren’t tested to the right standard.

The case of the “cheap” 8500 paver parts

Last spring, a customer came in with a quote for aftermarket Leeboy 8500 paver parts that was 30% below ours. They said “our dealer matches prices” (meaning one of the other dealers). I looked at the package: steel auger sections, chain sprockets, and a tamper bar.

The upside was saving about $2,400. The risk was that the parts were made in a plant we’d never audited and the seller couldn’t provide a material test report. I kept asking myself: is $2,400 worth potentially losing a whole paving week? I told the customer my honest review: the sprockets are untested, there’s no case-hardening certification, and if we install them and they fail, it’s a $6,000 teardown job.

He went with the cheaper parts anyway. Three months later, the auger chain stretched and wore the sprocket teeth to round points. The re-kit including labor came to $4,300. The “savings” disappeared — plus he had to rent a paver for two days while his was down. Total extra cost: about $9,800.

That’s not an edit. That’s the actual math. The decision now is on the customer’s record. I keep a folder of these cases because they teach TCO better than any spreadsheet I write.

When my advice might not apply

My experience is based on about 400 mid-range orders and covers medium-sized road contractors in the Midwest. If you’re running a national paving operation with your own supply chain team, your processes and leverage are different. You might have enough volume to justify testing every batch independently, or you might have better negotiating power for OEM pricing. The principles hold, but the weight of each cost changes.

Also, if you’re moving dirt only, you might not need paver parts at all — a motor grader and a dump truck might be enough until you decide to get into paving. And if you’re working with lift equipment like bucket trucks, you have a whole separate set of inspection standards (federal regulations for crane and bucket units go beyond what I’ve covered).

The same goes for “quality” brand names. Skullcandy makes decent consumer audio, but they’re not in the hearing protection business — just like a company that makes cheap replacement parts isn’t the same as one that sources OEM-grade materials.

Bottom line (the real one)

I’m not telling you that cheapest is always bad or expensive is always good. I’m saying you have to calculate the TCO before you compare quotes. Add inspection time, freight, potential downtime, and the odds of failure. Then decide.

If you don’t have the data to calculate those odds, ask for it. A reputable dealer will give you a material cert, a test report, or at least an honest “no we don’t have that.” That honesty is worth more than any first price. And if you’re still not sure how to thread a fitting — read the manual before you call me.
