The Grader I Rejected in January
In the second week of January 2025, a contractor asked us to look at a LeeBoy motor grader he wanted to buy from a seller three states away. The photos looked clean. The service records looked complete. The price was roughly 15% below what we would have asked for a similar machine on our own lot.
The contractor had already put down a deposit and booked transport. Then, at the last minute, he decided it was worth getting an inspection first. That is where my team comes in.
I'm the quality compliance manager for a heavy equipment dealer group. I review every machine that enters our inventory or leaves under our name—around 150 units a year (maybe 140; I'd have to check the 2024 file). I rejected about 12% of first deliveries last year. The reasons were rarely dramatic. They were usually small things that compound: a mismatched part, a worn pin, a spec that silently changed somewhere between the order form and the build.
That grader was no exception. The hour meter read 2,450. The service records said the transmission had been rebuilt at 2,100 hours—but the portal said something different. The seller had attached a service history from another machine. It's a neat trick. It works most of the time because most buyers never ask for the serial number.
The buyer got his deposit back, but he lost two weeks. His deadline didn't move. He rented a grader for two weeks at about $2,900 a day (give or take, depending on region). The 'savings' from that listing evaporated before the month ended.
The Surface Problem: Price vs. What the Machine Will Actually Do
The surface problem is easy to see. You search for a leeboy motor grader for sale, compare prices, look at the photos, call about hours and wear. That's normal. That's how equipment gets bought.
But a motor grader is not a big metal box with a blade attached. It's a system of moving parts that have to stay within tolerance. The circle. The moldboard base angle. The linkages between the cab controls and the blade. All of it wears. All of it can be rebuilt. None of it shows in a listing photo.
When a machine shows up at our shop with 'low hours' and 'freshly serviced' tags, my job is to find the detail that doesn't match the story. I've seen a drawbar cylinder swapped for a smaller-bore cylinder from a different model line. It worked fine in photos. It changed how the blade behaved under load. It was invisible unless you pulled the part number.
That's what 'looks good in a listing' means.
The Deep Cause: The Serial Number Nobody Asks For
Here's the deeper problem, the one that costs people money: most used-equipment buyers never verify the machine's identity before they pay.
Every LeeBoy grader has a serial number. That number is the key to everything—build configuration, service bulletins, parts history, documented hours. You can run that serial number through the leeboy dealer portal before you commit a single dollar.
Almost nobody does.
Why? Because the listing looks fine. The seller is friendly. The price is good. Asking for verification feels like friction, and friction feels like distrust. At least in my segment of this industry—used and demo grading equipment—it's the most skipped step in the whole buying process.
But friction is exactly what you're paying to avoid. A seller who can't or won't produce a serial number for a portal lookup is handing you a bag that may or may not contain a grader. I'll take that over a friendly phone call any day.
What I Used to Believe
When I first started in this role, I assumed the purchase decision was basically a math problem: model, hours, price. Those are the variables. That assumption lasted until I watched a contractor lose six weeks of a rural road project because the 'freshly serviced' machine they bought had a hydraulic pump that was sending metal shavings through the system. The pump died within 90 hours. The seller said 'as-is.'
I still think about that one. It's why my approach is now less elegant: assume every machine is lying to me until the documentation says otherwise.
Why Cheap Becomes Expensive
Let's do the math. A verified LeeBoy 685 with service history might cost 10–15% more than a no-documentation listing for the same model. That 10–15% is what I call the certainty premium. It buys the portal record, a phone number that answers, and parts that show up on time.
A lot of buyers treat that premium as waste. They'd rather take the lower quote and handle problems 'as they come.' Here's what 'as they come' looks like in 2024–2025 dollars:
- A rental motor grader runs about $2,900 per day, give or take $500 depending on class and region. Two weeks of rental? Over $40,000.
- A grading crew that shows up to a dead machine still gets paid. Idle crew time is four figures per day before you count the schedule.
- An overnight air-freighted part costs 3–5 times the same part through dealer stock—if it's in stock. If it isn't, the lead time is whatever the supply chain says it is.
- One redo on a grade pass—because the blade angle was wrong or the circle had too much play—can burn a five-figure amount in labor and material. I remember a $22,000 rework (circa 2024) that ended up in an insurance dispute.
One of our customers recently went back and forth between a documented 685 and a lower-priced 785 with no portal record. On paper, the 785 was more machine for the money. My gut said keep the 685. They chose the 685. It cost about 11% more, but it came with service history, dealer support, and a parts commitment. I think they avoided a problem we'll never be able to measure.
Price isn't a measure of quality. It's a measure of what information is missing. When a machine is cheap, the useful question is not 'what's wrong with it?' It's 'what am I not being told?'
This Isn't Only About Graders
The same logic applies across the whole fleet. Some of our customers run landfills, and their equipment tells the same story three ways: garbage trucks bring the waste in, a trash compactor works it down at the face, and a motor grader keeps the haul roads and the working surface drivable. When any one of those machines is down, the whole line starts to back up.
One landfill customer used to buy parts by lowest quote. Then a batch of compactor teeth arrived three weeks late—the part had cleared customs, then sat in a port for nine days. Losing a day of inbound tonnage at a landfill is not a rounding error. Now they buy parts with a guaranteed turnaround. Not the cheapest. Not the fastest. Just the one with a date they can plan around.
Different machine. Same lesson. The cheapest part is the one already on the shelf when you're falling behind. The same goes for the garbage truck alternator that 'should' arrive by Friday.
(Quick aside: because I work in quality, people occasionally send me consumer products to 'verify.' Someone once asked me to check a 'can crusher yeti' they found online—one of those gift-guide things you immediately doubt. I said no. For $30, buy it yourself and test it on a six-pack. That's the difference a price tag makes. On a six-figure grader, 'try it and see' is not a strategy.)
A Note on Standards
ISO 20474 covers earth-moving machinery safety—and it's a legitimate reference, not something to argue with. But it doesn't address purchase risk. It describes how a machine should be built, not what was done to this particular machine after it left the factory. For that, the only reference that matters is the OEM's own technical documentation for that serial number.
When we inspect a LeeBoy grader, we use LeeBoy's tolerances, not a generic 'looks fine' standard. That's the reason to check the dealer portal. It's not an administrative step. It's where the actual spec for that exact machine lives.
What I Actually Recommend
Here's the short version. It's shorter than the problem because the problem is the part that usually gets skipped.
- Get the serial number before you get excited. Ask for it while the listing is still on screen. Run it through the leeboy dealer portal or ask a LeeBoy dealer to pull the history. If the seller hesitates, you have your answer.
- Use the dealer network as a resource, not a last resort. A machine sold through an authorized dealer comes with a documented service file and genuine parts support. That file is worth real money. If you buy private-party, pay a qualified inspector who knows the model line—and give them the OEM spec to check.
- Inspect at three checkpoints. Before deposit. Before shipping. Before final payment. Measure the things the OEM defines: pin-and-bore wear, cutting edge condition, hydraulic function, part number matches. No generic 'looks good' reports.
- Price the cost of waiting, not just the cost of buying. If your contract can't absorb a two-week parts delay, budget for dealer-stock parts and a support agreement with defined lead times. The extra cost is the price of certainty. In an emergency, certainty is the only thing that actually matters.
The Part I Want You to Remember
No machine is bulletproof. I wouldn't promise one. But after four years of reviewing equipment, I can tell you the pattern without hesitation.
A leeboy motor grader for sale is a starting point, not a promise.
The buyers who sleep well are the ones who treat the serial number, the dealer portal, and the service history as part of the purchase price. The ones who skip that part pay for it later—in rental invoices, in rework, in parts that arrived too late, or in the quiet cost of wondering whether the machine will be ready by Friday.
That last cost is the one you can't inspect for. But you can avoid it right at the beginning, when the decision is still cheap.
